Foundation repair in Bloomington, Texas

Foundation help for Bloomington, a railroad and oilfield town on State Highway 185 southeast of Victoria.

Bloomington is about fifteen miles southeast of Victoria on State Highway 185. It grew from a station on the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway built in 1906, was laid out in 1910 and named for Bloomington, Illinois, where many early settlers came from. Oil was found nearby in 1947, and DuPont and Union Carbide plants built in the early 1950s brought jobs. The census counted 2,082 residents in 2020, and Bloomington ISD serves the community.

Homes from several eras

Because the town grew in spurts, from the railroad years through the postwar plant boom, Bloomington homes range from older raised houses to slab homes, and the two move differently. Raised houses tend to show soft floors and shims that have slipped over the years. Slab homes more often show a dropped corner and cracked brick.

Flat ground and slow drainage

The land around Bloomington is level coastal prairie. Water that falls next to a house often has nowhere obvious to go, so it sits against the foundation and soaks into the clay. Ditches that have filled in, or a yard raised by years of topsoil and mulch, can make that worse. Part of a lasting repair here is often getting water to the street or a ditch.

Permits

Bloomington is unincorporated, so the City of Victoria's building permits don't apply. If your lot is in a mapped floodplain, check Victoria County's floodplain rules before regrading or adding fill.
